We must consider that what we do in worship of greater eternal significance than how we do it. Of greater significance yet is whom we worship.
-Constance M. Cherry
WHY DO WE WORSHIP?
We worship primarily and simply because God is. Without Him, there would be no reason to worship, but because of Him, we have every reason to. Before there was anything, there was God. He is our creator, the Holy and almighty Lord. We are saved, redeemed and loved by Him. We are invited by Him to respond in worship.
Worship comes in many forms, one of them being through music and song.
WHY DO WE SING?
If we look first for examples in scripture, we will see that there is a long Biblically recorded history of singing. We read of God’s people offering songs in response to who His character and His works starting in Genesis and ending in Revelation. To quickly cite some examples look to the songs of Moses & Miriam after crossing the red sea (Ex. 15), the Israelites in the wilderness (Num. 21), Moses & Joshua after giving the law (Duet. 31), all of the Psalms & the Song of Songs, David’s many songs throughout 1st & 2nd Samuel, songs recorded in Isaiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel & Habakuk. In the New Testament we read of Elizabeth’s benediction & Mary’s song (Luke 1:39-55), Zechariah singing his way out of silence when John is born (Luke 1:67-79), angel choirs ring out at the birth of Christ (Luke 2:13-14), and Simeon sings over the baby Jesus (Luke 2:28-32).
From creation the stars and angles have been singing (Job. 38:7)—and we will all join in singing forevermore; Holy, Holy Holy is the Lord Almighty who was and is and is to come (Revelation 4:8)!
Secondly, God asks us to love him with all our heart, soul mind and strength. (Duet. 6:5, Matt. 22:37) We are made to honor God in worship with all of who we are. When we practice physical disciplines like fasting, taking communion, confessing our sins and singing to God we can incorporate our whole being, body and soul. Singing, then, is a meaningful and embodied way to love God.
Lastly, here are three practical and noteworthy reasons we can observe for singing are: 1. Putting words to song helps us to memorize and retain information.
2. Singing helps us to express worship to God, even when we don’t feel like it or don’t have words of our own. and
3. Music speaks to the heart.
WHY DO WE DO THIS CORPORATLEY?
Paul writes to the church in Colossae:
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” (Col. 3:16)
In asking the church to sing together, Paul shows us that we build each other up when we offer worship to God. Worship through song is not meant to be a solitary, internalized experience—but by its very nature, it is an externalized engagement we practice together as a body.
Individually, we cannot always sing with conviction and fervor—but united as the body of Christ, we are strengthened and carried by the Holy Spirit. We do not walk alone. God is glorified when the Church comes together to praise Him with one heart and one voice.
